Dear sabrecmc Thank you for all the hard work Do you have any pining recs? All the pining, mutual pining, he couldn’t possibly be attracted to me because I’m so unworthy pining, just pining Celestial Navigation is such a wonderful example of the pining trope; anything along those lines would be great. Thank you again
I’m so glad you enjoyed CN! We already have Pining Steve and Oblivious Tony recs, so check those out, but here are some longish, mutual pining fics that you might like. All are over 10K for a nice, slow burn. Obviously, pining is one of the Stony fandom standards, so there is a lot to choose from!
The Lengths That I Will Go To by @polizwrites: After forty-five years, Howard Stark discovers the
wreck of the Valkyrie and that Captain America somehow survived the
crash and nearly a half-century of being frozen in the ice. Tony
Stark, having been brought back to the fold after several years of
freedom, finds himself face to face with his childhood idol (and teenage
crush) when he is recruited to help care for the recovering Captain
Rogers, whose existence is being kept a secret.
I’ll Give You Gifts Until You Know My Name by @everybodyilovedies: Mr. Stark is an extravagant gift-giver: he has the
money for it, after all. As Iron Man, Tony has the opportunity to gift
Steve even more presents that, while less expensive, are more heartfelt.
Having a secret identity means Tony gets to have his cake and eat it
too when it comes to showering Steve with presents.Until Steve
starts developing feelings for his armored companion, and all the
benefits of living a double life are turned on their head for Tony
Who You Think You Are by Tahlruil:
In a world where no one knows the identity of Iron Man, Tony Stark is
the best thing since sliced bread, at least in the opinion of one Steve
Rogers. He doesn’t like to let anyone know that – especially not Tony –
but one day it sort of slips out. Luckily it’s only to his best friend,
and Shellhead won’t tell anyone. What could possibly go wrong?
Stars Fading, But I Linger On, Dear by @chibisquirt:
A Soulmate AU where people meet their soulmate in their dreams. Of
course, not even that solves all the world’s problems, especially if one
or more of the soulmates has a secret identity…
We Are Far Too Young and Clever by @laudatenium: In his head, he knew Tony was still a kid. Suffering
from shell shock and whatever emotional abuse Howard had managed to put
him through. But even with that, Tony somehow rose above it all to become extraordinary. He was a teammate, a genius, and a friend. He was terribly mature for his age. Tony was Iron Man, not Iron Boy.Despite everything, there still stood an age difference of ten or seventy-six years, depending on your calculation. But his heart was telling him not to listen.—-AU where Tony becomes Iron Man at 16, an Avenger at 17, and Steve’s … infatuation at 18.
Saving the World is Totally a Date by @wordsplat: Tony discovers Stane’s betrayal while he’s still being
held captive. When he escapes, he sets out to ruin Stane as completely
and ruthlessly as he can, playing up his PTSD and quitting his job to
destroy Stane quietly from the outside. He also picks up a teaching
job-all Pepper’s fault-and oh, right, becomes a supervillain. Okay, that
one was Tony’s fault, but it was totally an accident. In the
meantime, a certain Capsicle is defrosted a year early, and is assigned
the task of capturing the notorious Iron Man. It’s not going
particularly well, if the embarrassingly high number of times he’s been
kidnapped in the past six months is any indication. When SHIELD decides
to help him “adjust” by getting him a teaching job, Steve is skeptical;
but then there’s Tony, and Steve finds he doesn’t mind the 21st century
so much after all.
Falling Into You by sabrecmc: Tony and Steve end up as fuck buddies after the events
of The Winter Soldier until Steve calls it off. When Loki’s spell wipes
all of Steve’s memories since the last time Loki was in town, Tony
decides it will be so much easier to just not tell Steve they had
something of a relationship. Spoiler: It isn’t. Or, how Steve fell in love with Tony and forgot about it, and how Tony fell in love with Steve and realized it.
